Pre Competition Get Together

Saturday May 31st
The informal pre competition get together will take place at The Star Inn, Liverton, Newton Abbot, Devon which is a short drive away from where most of you are staying.
Meeting at 7pm there will be an informal get together over a few drinks and a buffet put together by the landlady Lisa.
This will be a good time to find out any extra information you might require and meet other teams in a friendly atmosphere.
I look forward to meeting you all there.
David Grove.

XVI Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships 2014

The South West Lakes Trust warmly welcomes all the participants of the XVI Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships to Devon, England in June 2014. We are pleased to be able to offer a variety of lake fishing venues (both boat and bank) in picturesque locations to compliment the Dartmoor river fishing venue on the River Dart.

Kennick Reservoir:

A Victorian reservoir built in the late 19th century to supply water to the resort of Torbay, Kennick is believed to be one of the earliest reservoirs to be stocked with trout for recreational fishing. Set in the gentler South East edge of Dartmoor, surrounded by rolling hills and wooded valleys, the reservoir is just under 50 acres, reaching a maximum depth of 27 feet  by the dam. The fishery is regularly stocked with rainbow trout up to 8lbs (with the occasional larger fish) to compliment the wild brown trout population, and offers both boat and bank fishing. Fly-life mainly consists of Caddis, Chironamids, and Damsel flies, complimented by good hatches of Hawthorns and Beetles, with Diawl Bachs, Buzzers, and Damsel Nymphs providing consistent sport throughout the season.

Siblyback:

Located in the striking surroundings of Bodmin Moor, surrounded by gentle pasture hillsides, and with granite tors and outcrops in the distance, Siblyback offers 140 acres of fly fishing from both boat and bank for stocked rainbows (up to 8lbs), always with the chance to catch a specimen natural grown-on brown trout. In addition to prolific hatches of chironomids over ‘The Marshes’, sedges, beetles, and daddy-longlegs all provide abundant natural food, as do the shoals of sticklebacks which provide opportunities for ‘fry bashing’.  A variety of terrestrial patterns, buzzers, emergers and nymph patterns all produce good results.

Wimbleball:

Just over the county border into Somerset, Wimbleball is a nationally renowned stocked rainbow trout fishery. At over 370 acres, and over 130 feet deep by the dam, Wimbleball offers a wide variety of fishing locations to suit all tastes from both boat and bank for stocked rainbowtrout. In addition to the usual stillwater fly-life (Buzzers, Caddis, tadpoles etc), Wimbleball also boasts a good mayfly hatch in June in the wooded Upton Arm near the dam, patrolled by the lake’s native wild brown trout.

Fernworthy:

Set on one of the highest points on Dartmoor, this picturesque reservoir of 78 acres, built in the 1940’s, offers traditional fly fishing for both wild and stocked brown trout. With good hatches of midges, beetles, and sedges, traditional style dark patterns (wet and dry) produce the best results.

Burrator:

This fishery has been recently upgraded, offering fly fishing from the bank for stocked rainbows and wild brown trout. Situated in a stunning location on the South West edge of Dartmoor, there are over 150 acres of water surrounded by woodland and distinctive Dartmoor tors, with the National Park as a back-drop.
